Midnight Clear: A Holiday Anthology

Midnight Clear
Excellent Holiday book. I read this book in 2000, again in 2001 and it will be re-read in 2002. My favorite story was The Choice by Monica Jackson.

Mystical
These four Christmas stories were awesome. Each story was something truly special and they were all first-class material. I must admit my favorite was The Choice by Monica Jackson. I know the holidays are over but if you can your hand on a copy of this novel, do so.

A Pleasant Surprise!
I got much more than I had anticipated as I read these stories of inhabitants and former inhabitants of Mystic Ridge. The stories contained history as well as wonderful characters with whom anyone can identify.

Nothin' Personal Doc, But I Hate Dentists!
Published in Paperback by IHD Publishing (11 November, 1999)
Authors: McHenry Lee, Joleen Jackson, Vicki J. Audette, and McHenry "Mac" Lee
Average review score:

Tells it like it should be....
As a general dentist, I see many of my new patients struggling with the issues that are covered in "Nothin' Personal Doc, But I Hate Dentists!" Mac and Joleen have many combined years of experience in the dental field and they have taken this expertise and transformed it into "English" for the patient to be able to understand easily, instead of "Dental-ese" which we are often guilty of using when speaking to our patients.

This book allows patients to make informed choices and to give them an idea as to what they should ask their dentist during the visit. A well-educated, talented and confident dentist welcomes any patient questions. We know that the better informed our patients are, the better choices they can make for themselves regarding their dental health.

This book is a milestone in bridging the gap between dentists and their patients. I give it to all my new patients and encourage them to spread the word to everyone they know. Mac and Joleen have helped not only the general public, but also the dental community with the publication of their informative book. I recommend it for anyone who has a dental visit coming up, or if you are looking for a new dentist! (which, together, SHOULD make up 100% of the population)

I'm recommending this book for all my patients
I am a dentist and believe that this book has useful information for anyone interested in restoring and preserving their dental health. This book is aimed at the person who is apprehensive about going to the dentist. Based on the premise that most fear is of the unknown, Dr. Mac Lee, Joleen Jackson and Vicki Audette have written this book with the aim of demystifying dentistry.

Speaking personally, I know that sometimes I struggle to explain things that to me make perfect sense in a nontechnical, nonthreatening manner. This book does that.

It starts by discussing common reasons people are afraid to go to the dentist and tries to help get you past those fears. Whether you are afraid it'll hurt, or your embarassed for us to see your teeth, Dr. Lee gives tips on how to get past these feelings so that you can get the dental care you need.

The book goes on to describe various dental procedures, what is involved in them, and questions you should ask. I especially like the section on children's dental needs. It covers every age range and answers common questions about subjects such as baby teeth, braces, and broken teeth.

I can't tell you how strongly I feel that this is a great book for any dental consumer. I am ordering copies for several of my patients as well as copies to donate to our local library.

GREAT WORK
Being a new mother i was exicited to find information in the section "From Womb to Wisdom." It is going to be an excellent guide line in my new childs dental health. Every parent should own this book for the important dental needs that every child most desperatly needs. Thank you authors such needed informaiton!

Progressions: The Art of Jon Foster
Published in Hardcover by Steve Jackson Games (July, 2003)
Authors: Foster and Steve Jackson Games
Average review score:

INCREDIBLE VISUAL STYLE
Finally Jon Foster's incredible visuals are collected under one cover as opposed to appearing on them. From his jaw-dropping work on the various Star Wars books to his retro-futuristic robots, Foster's paintings explode with a stunning sense of wonder. Unlike many other illustrators working in the medium today, Foster's work is consistently innovative, fresh and inspired. A must have.

A "must-have" for artists and art enthusiasts!
I've been waiting for this book for quite some time now and was finally able to get my copy! I've been a fan of Jon Foster's work after seeing it in the Spectrum illustration annuals and Progressions does not disappoint. Not only is the content of the book exciting and thought provoking, the actual layout lends itself perfectly to his work. Progressions is an interesting combination of sketches, paintings, and reflection which I highly recommend!

Fantastic book by a great artist
Every once in a while you run across an artist who makes you see things in a new way. Mr. Foster's book opened my eyes to new artistic possibilities and put a smile on my face :)

His technique is fantastic and the subject matter is exciting!

A Bundle of Fun
this is so good of a book its fun to read and the lion is a sucker for carrot stew kids of all ages will love this book

Very fun to read
What a wonderful and fun story this is. I love reading this book to my daughter and have read it to her in whole or part dozens of times. Since it is a joy to read and the story flows page to page, I don't mind reading it to her again and again even if she'll only sit still for a few pages (she's currently only 6 ½ months old).
While I understand that to make finding things easier books for children get categorized by age (and this one is in the 4 to 8) don't be misled into thinking that this book isn't suitable for babies or toddlers, they simply need someone to read it to them. I love this book and if she chews and tears the pages I'll gladly buy another.

The Tawny Scrawny Lion is worthwhile children's literature.
I've been reading this book to my first graders for years. It never fails to inspire lively discussion on such topics as friendship, sharing, trust, and a host of other worthy subjects. The story is fun, and the messages are gentle, but my six year olds never fail to pick up on them. This is a story that has been around since my childhood and it is as entertaining and fresh a story as it was then. I highly recommend this book.

Bears on Bears: Interviews and Discussions
Published in Paperback by Alyson Pubns (February, 2002)
Author: Ron Jackson Suresha
Average review score:

GRRRRRReat & Insightful Reading
Though I have only been exposed to the gay sub-culture, know as BEARS, for almost 4 years, it was fascinating to read the history of how this wide spread community began. Ron Suresha seems to have opened a whole new realm in the way I look at this group of masculine, "regular Joe"group of men.
The interviews in this book really get to the heart of what makes up the psychy of a BEAR man. And suprisingly, we are not much different than any other man..gay or straight!
These are very candid interviews and even give some insight into the author's 1st encounters with the BEAR sub-culture, back in its infancy!
GRRRRRRRReat job Ron & I am anticipatorily waiting for your next book!

very well done
the best of the 'bear' books so far. some of the interviews are quite thought-provoking. though there are plenty of critical things said throughout the book, it's the affirming comments that i remember. bear culture has been in the past a path for some gay men to grow and learn more about themselves and others. the book suggests that this phenomenon has not completely passed....

A Bear on "Bears on Bears"
I was given "Bears on Bears" as a gift, and read it from cover to cover with interest and excitement. As a self-described bear who has been in a relationship with another self-described bear for 23 years, I thought "I had seen or knew it all." I was wrong. Ron's book opened my eyes to a much wider world, filled with diversity, a sense of history, and evolution. His interviews with a wide spectrum of men (and even a couple of women!) gave me comfort in knowing that my own experiences were not as unique as I once thought, and allowed me to learn more about the people and events that enable me to live the life I currently enjoy (as well as better understand myself). I highly recommend this book to anyone who is part of or interested in the "bear scene" not only in the United States but also around the world. It's a great read and a great learning experience.

A Vineyard Killing : A Martha's Vineyard Mystery
Published in Hardcover by Scribner (10 June, 2003)
Author: Philip Craig
Average review score:

Will real estate developers take over Martha's Vineyard?
J. W. Jackson is an ex Boston policeman. He likes to live the simple life and especially to fish. He, his wife Zee, who is a nurse in the local hospital, and their two children, Joshua and Diana live on Martha's Vineyard.

Paul Fox is shot outside the E and E Deli in Vineyard Haven on the island. J. W. and Zee were inside eating. J. W. runs outside to help him. Luckily Paul was wearing a bulletproof vest.

It is possible that Paul's brother, Donald, who is an Olympic gold medalist who is now a ruthless real estate developer, was the intended target. Donald's company is trying to buy up fuzzy old deeds and evicting homeowners on the island. One of his agents, Albert Kirkland, recently tried to buy the Jackson's home. J. W. is a part-time PI and takes the case to find out who is trying to kill Donald.

J. W. begins looking into Donald's life and finds many suspects, especially angry homeowners on the island. He begins looking into John Reilly for a friend and finds that no one knows where he lives. In attempting to follow him home, two men begin following J. W. From here things just keep getting complicated until J. W. can finally make sense of everything.

I love this series. We vacationed in New England last summer and we went to Marth'as Vineyard specifically because of my reading this series. It is as lovely in the books as it is in person. Mr. Craig has really captured the life and beauty of the island.

The main characters in this series are well written. Every time I read a book in this series, I feel like I'm catching up with an old friend. In each book, the new characters are constructed just as well. He has a real gift for making his characters real.

The plot in each book, this one included, is so well written you cannot figure out the mystery completely.

I truly enjoyed this book and love this series. I highly recommend it.

A Vineyard Killing
Philip Craig continues to have quality books one right after another. I happened upon his books three years ago and have read all of them. I only wish he could write/publish more per year.
Someone in Hollywood should also wake up and make some movies out of them. Watch out Mary Higgins Clark!

Philip,,,Thought it through very well.
If you have read Craig before, there is both recognition of style and surprise. I've noticed the other reviewers and the Editorial reviews are partially giving away the mystery, not mentioning what a wonderful flowing who done it mystery this is. The characters are well defined, the chapters are clearly planned and separated so as not to loose even the most light hearted. I have to say, I think this is Philips best yet, and that is a heavy statement. If you enjoyed this, read Mad Light by Maddox.
